Apache Airavata is an open-source software framework used by developers to compose, manage, execute, and monitor large-scale computational jobs and workflows on distributed computing resources. It serves as a middle layer of software (middleware) that connects user-facing websites, known as science gateways, with backend supercomputers, local computer clusters, national grids, and cloud platforms.
Originally created at the Extreme Computing Lab at Indiana University to handle complex weather forecasting data, it is now managed by the Apache Software Foundation.
