To use a “fake” webcam on your PC, you need to set up a virtual camera. This software-based camera tricks your computer and communication apps into treating prerecorded videos, photos, or desktop screens exactly like a live physical webcam feed.

The absolute best and safest way to do this is by using the free, open-source software OBS Studio.

Watch this quick tutorial to see how easily you can set up and activate the virtual camera in OBS: Here is the step-by-step process to get it up and running. 1. Download and Install OBS Studio

Download the free installer directly from the OBS Studio Official Website.

Install the software on your Windows PC following the default setup wizard prompts. 2. Add Your “Fake” Media Content Open OBS Studio after installation.

Look at the Scenes box in the bottom-left corner and click the + (Plus) icon to create a new scene.

Go to the adjacent Sources box, click the + (Plus) icon, and select your media:

For a prerecorded video: Select Media Source, check the Loop box (so the video repeats infinitely), and browse for your video file.

For a static image: Select Image and upload your background or photo.

For your desktop screen: Select Display Capture to stream your desktop live.

Drag the red corners of your media in the preview window to fit the screen. 3. Activate the Virtual Camera

Look at the Controls dock on the bottom-right side of the OBS screen. Click the button labeled Start Virtual Camera.

Your PC will now actively broadcast your OBS workspace as a functional webcam signal. 4. Select the Fake Camera in Your App

Open your target application (such as Discord, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or Google Chrome).

Open the application’s Settings menu and navigate to the Video or Webcam tab.

Change the default camera input device from your physical camera to OBS Virtual Camera.

Ensure your video is oriented correctly; if the preview appears mirrored, return to OBS, right-click your source, select Transform, and click Flip Horizontal. Alternative Dedicated Software Options
