How to Use SteamShutdown to Turn Off Your PC After Downloads

Leaving your PC running overnight to finish a massive game download is a common ritual for gamers. However, keeping your computer powered on for hours after a download finishes wastes electricity and increases wear on your hardware. Steam does not feature a native “shut down when finished” option, but a lightweight, open-source tool called SteamShutdown solves this exact problem.

Here is how to set up and use SteamShutdown to automatically turn off your PC when your Steam downloads wrap up. What is SteamShutdown?

SteamShutdown is a free, third-party utility designed specifically for Windows. It monitors your local Steam client’s download queue. The moment your active downloads hit 100%, the application triggers a system command to shut down, sleep, or hibernate your computer. Because it functions externally, it requires no complex modifications to your Steam account or game files. Step 1: Download and Install SteamShutdown

Open your web browser and navigate to the official GitHub repository for SteamShutdown (created by developer mrousavy).

Click on the Releases section on the right side of the page. Download the latest .exe installer file.

Run the installer and follow the on-screen prompts to complete the setup. Step 2: Configure Your Steam Downloads

Before launching the tool, ensure your Steam downloads are active and properly queued. Launch Steam and go to your Library.

Start or resume the game updates or installations you want to finish.

Navigate to the Downloads tab at the bottom of the Steam client to verify that the files are actively downloading. Step 3: Link SteamShutdown to Your PC Open the SteamShutdown application.

The tool automatically detects your active Steam client and displays your current download progress in its minimalist window.

Click the dropdown menu within SteamShutdown to choose your preferred automated action: Shut Down: Powers off your PC completely.

Sleep: Puts your PC into a low-power state so you can resume work quickly.

Hibernate: Saves your current session to your hard drive and powers down.

Select the mode you want, and ensure the tool is toggled to Active.

Once configured, you can safely walk away from your desk or go to bed. SteamShutdown will quietly monitor the progress bar and safely turn off your PC the moment the final megabyte transfers. If you want to optimize your setup further, let me know:
